Why Covid-19 could be disastrous for Leicester City

Updated: Apr 4, 2020

As a wicked pandemic sweeps through the world like wildfire, ultimately effecting the lives of millions around the globe, I take a look on how the unexpected top 4 challengers, Leicester City, may have taken an abrupt and damaging hit from this unexpected virus.

If we cast our minds back only 3 months ago it was looking more or less a certainty that Leicester City would once again shock the world and break the unbreakable barrier of the Premier League `top 6` to claim European football. It may have been a surprise for many to see the Foxes catapult up the standings, but many of City`s fans and observers knew the potential of this young, hungry and outstandingly talented group. So much so that the fans and media were labelling it the `do or die` season for Rodgers and his men.

The wealth of talent at Rodgers disposal of course claimed the attention of some of Europe`s elite clubs. Influential players like Ricardo Periera, Wilfred Ndidi, James Maddison and Caglar Soyuncu were all being linked with moves away from The King Power as Europe's big boys started to circle like sharks. We all know how difficult it would be to stop a European powerhouse from ripping the life and soul from a vibrant Leicester City, so the only way to beat them, was to join them.

To distinguish the claim that `bigger clubs` would offer Champions League football would be a start, and with Leicester sitting pretty in 3rd, 8 points ahead of Manchester United in 5th it was looking increasingly likely that this notion would materialise. Yet the emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic could of well and truly ravaged the valiant effort and plans put in place by the ambitious board, staff and players to keep this adept group binded together.

Talk of the season becoming `null and void` does bring an odd joke and a sly smirk to most when concerning Liverpool, but its not just the reds who should be anxious. The season being abolished could truly ruin the Foxes future, having most the squad being torn apart by European giants, the club squashed and suffocated by the presumptuous fan demands and a poisonous atmosphere that dampens and droughts the once optimistic feeling around The King Power Stadium. All hypothetical of course, but by no means unrealistic, we have seen it happen before and we could quite easily see it happen again.

The thought that Leicester fans may never actually see this group play again together is a thought of drab gloominess, this may have been the shot of a lifetime to engrave Leicester`s place at the very top of domestic and European football. With generous owners willing to invest, rather than seeing players leave, we could of quite easily seen some of football`s most renowned magicians skip through the door.

There is still hope though, the Premier League, along with most other European League`s are still deciding what the best cause of action will be to combat this dilemma.

Other options include:

1. Wait until the government gives us the all clear and play on.

2. Play on without fans.

3. Give Liverpool the trophy and enforce relegation standings.

4. Promote West Brom and Leeds and have a 22 team Premier League while keeping with the current standings in the top flight.

5. Suspend the League and play the rest at a later date.

All of the above are much better options for Leicester rather than calling the season `null and void`. For all clubs the restless wait continues for the Premier League to finalise their verdict, whatever happens its been a peculiar season, one that will be remembered for reasons other than football, hang in there guys, it will be back soon!

Just a quick thank you to all the Key Workers battling through these tough times, we all appreciate the tremendous work you are all doing to try and keep this country safe, Thank You.
