Where will Jadon Sancho go?

Updated: Sep 28, 2020

I take a look at Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho`s possible destinations as the clock ticks down for the Summer transfer window to swoop open.

Its extremely rare these days to see English players fly and thrive abroad, David Beckham springs to mind from his famous spells at Real Madrid and PSG. More recently a certain 29 year old Kieran Tripper`s move to the Spanish capital at Atletico Madrid. Yet one that is tantalising the tongues of football fans around the galaxy is 20 year-old Borussia Dortmund hit man Jadon Sancho.

After joining the Bundesliga side in the August of 2017 from a prosperous Manchester City for a fee of only £8m, it seems the sizeable risk Sancho took to take the leap across the uncharted pond from Manchester to Dortmund has paid off. In his first season, at just 17, he was given chances at the highest level of German football, scoring once and providing 4 assists in 12 appearances at the latter end of the Bundesliga season. His handful of electric performances were reasonable enough to paint the promising youngster into the wider picture for the following season. His real break-through season arrived in 2018/19 under French coach Lucien Favre, scoring 13 times and assisting a further 19 goals, astonishingly claiming a goal or an assist every 90 minutes in all competitions.

The key to any world-class player is consistency and that`s just what the England international has displayed this season, bettering his monumental tally from last season already, assimilating 36 goal involvements in 35 games. There is no wonder Europe`s big hitters are lining up a move for the bright star, but who are these clubs rumoured to be lining up a bid to lure Sancho to their projects?

Manchester United:

Whenever a transfer war begins over the continent it seems inevitable for the old war horse `Manchester United` to get involved, or at least rumoured to be. Could Sancho really be on the move to his former clubs rival and transfer to the red side of Manchester?

Its clear to see that the gargantuan rebuild that has been going on for some time will need some signings of great calibre to get them back to the glory days and the new project implemented by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer fits in adequately with the idea behind the possible transfer.

Last summer United decided to ditch their superstar buying tendencies and manufacture a new plan that would see a patient and calculated transformation. This would be signing younger players they could mould into superstars themselves, Daniel James, Aaron Wan Bissaka and Harry Maguire all provide coherent validation for this point. United have also decided to go with a home-grown approach, nurturing and guiding some of Britain`s finest talents. This fits the profile of a particular Manchester born sensation, learning his trade elsewhere.

With United potentially freeing up some funds from the possible sale of Paul Pogba and the annual Red Devil clear-out, it would seem Sancho could breathe some life into the some-what lifeless United attack, he could be packing his bags for a possible transfer very soon.

Possibility : Very Likely

Real Madrid:

Another name that plagues transfer rumour columns of newspapers and articles around the footballing world is that of the historic and unprecedented Real Madrid. Will Sancho fall victim to the latest name Real snap up?

Its a no-brainier that they have the funds, the trophies, the stadium, the history, the galacticos. It would be a dream scenario for most to play for arguably the best football club in history, have his name alongside pristine legends of the game, like Zidane and Ronaldo. Real Madrid would certainly offer success, constantly on the hunt for their next trophy, disappointed if they don`t win every competition they enter, Sancho would certainly become a winner in Spain.

There is an ugly side to the Spanish giants though, just ask Gareth Bale. The fan base is constantly accused of hate and bringing a poisonous atmosphere that effects many of their players, towards the back-end of his Madrid career even the much decorated Cristiano Ronaldo received his fair share of abuse.

Sancho would also have to fight past many to claim a concrete first team place with Eden Hazard and Vinicious Junior holding the helm at this moment in time. It would be an obvious choice for the Dortmund wide-man to bite off any chance at playing for Real Madrid, but the obvious choice isn`t always the right one.

Possibility : Likely

Stay at Dortmund :

One option that must be discussed is his chance to stay, his performances at the German side have been mesmeric, why fix what`s not broken?

I`m sure most English and Dortmund fans, well, fans in general are loving the performances Sancho is putting in week-in, week-out and his chance to win something at Dortmund is not a certainty but is a possibility. The `black and yellows` are pushing German powerhouses Bayern Munchen very close to the Bundesliga title this year and they were narrowly knocked out of the Champions League by an admirable Paris Saint Germain side.

The signing of fellow youngster and now team-mate Erling Braut Haland shows the ambition of the club after beating off many of Europe`s elite to claim his signature. It also provides some substance to Dortmund`s track record of nurturing youngsters, so why would he leave and jeopardise the chance of growing into an even better player?

It would be a surprising but sensible decision for the much wanted winger to turn down other clubs and remain where he is.

Possibility : Fair
